Couch Potato Preparedness

Born on May 7th 1901, Gary Gooper, who won Oscars for the movies High Noon and Sergeant York, starred in over 100 movies, many of them westerns. “Coop” learned to ride horses on his father’s ranch, and thus rode properly in his movies. Television shows and movies often show incorrect ways to address emergencies and inaccurate disaster situations. Sweeping across the tops of flames with an extinguisher (rather than aiming toward the base), “running” to escape an approaching earthquake, and other gaffs are plentiful. Use these opportunities to educate your audiences! Be sure to point out the correct actions, and explain why it is the recommended choice. By using television and movies as teaching tools, you’ll help your audiences become more prepared from the comfort of their couch.
