International Day of Disabled Persons

In 1992, the UN established December 3rd as “International Day of Disabled Persons” to increase understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. The UN hopes the observance of this day will raise awareness of the benefits of fully integrating persons with disabilities into society.

View your office from the perspective of disabled consumers. Is it easy to reach and enter your office? Are pathways clear and navigable – with no hazards or obstructions? Are escape exits clearly labeled and accessible? Are staff and volunteers properly trained to assist people with disabilities in an emergency? If you answered no to any of these questions, take action! Aspire to move beyond being ADA-compliant to being ADA champions!

Body Doubles

March 26th is the birthday of Dar Allen Robinson (Mar. 26, 1947 – Nov. 21, 1986), legendary stunt actor and body double, who broke world records performing death-defying feats for such actors as Steve McQueen and Christopher Plummer. In disaster exercises, physically able volunteers often serve as “body doubles”, pretending to be people with disabilities. This practice prevents the exercising agency from getting accurate and insightful feedback from the people who truly understand their own needs and disability issues. It also stops people with disabilities from meaningfully participating in an important aspect of community readiness. In drills and exercises, look for ways to actively engage people with disabilities – and seize the opportunity to develop mutually beneficial relationships.
