5-Minute Message: Religion

Many diverse religious observances are showcased in December – so it’s a great learning opportunity for community educators. A person’s commitment to their religious teachings can have a significant impact on their attitude toward preparedness. Some faiths have an edict to store supplies for emergencies. For many, disasters unfold according to God’s plan, and acting to change the outcome can be seen as sacrilegious — especially depending on the way it is presented. Some groups maintain the separation of church and state quite strongly, and resist government directives unless they are required by law. During the holiday season many people are more open to discussing their faith and point of view. Use this time to discover common ground, understand points of disagreement, and otherwise learn how to better address the preparedness needs of diverse religious communities.
