AB 903 UPDATE: Legislation on nonprofit disaster funding — Bay Area Public Hearing June 28th/Briefing webinar June 24th

Hello friends and champions of the nonprofit sector!

Great News! A public hearing on Assembly Bill 903 – Nonprofit Disaster Funding has been scheduled for June 28th in Oakland from 1:00pm -5:00pm!

We pushed for this because the Bay Area has long been the home of the nonprofit preparedness movement, and Bay Area disasters have — literally and legally — changed the way disasters are handled across the country. The deadline for written comments has also been extended to June 28th.

This legislation officially recognizes a multitude of nonprofits as being an important part of the response to disasters. This is a long-awaited and extraordinary step forward and we encourage you to help make this legislation all that it can be.

CARD’s partner agencies at the Sacramento hearing included: CADRE, California Association of Food Banks, California Primary Care Association, Jewish Family and Children’s Services, Northern California VOAD, SF CARD, The San Francisco Foundation, and the Thrive Alliance.

We hope nonprofit and faith agencies, particularly direct service providers with disaster response experience, will review the attached information and attend the June 28th hearing.

To help you understand how AB 903 will impact your organization, we have scheduled a webinar for Thursday, June 24th from 11:30am-1:30pm to review the proposed regulations and issues. We hope that you will join us for this session. Please register for the webinar at: https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/192684777. You’ll receive a confirmation e-mail which includes the web link and call-in details.

If you are not able to attend, but have a story to share or a concern you’d like aired, please feel free to call me, post a comment on this blog or email me at AMJ@CARDcanhelp.org

Thanks and congratulations to all,
Ana-Marie

Got Leftover$?

As 2007 comes to an end, there’s still time to transform the level of safety and preparedness at local nonprofits with a tax-deductible donation. If you have leftover funds in your personal or business charitable donations accounts: PLEASE consider earmarking them for nonprofit readiness! Your dollars can help your favorite local agencies prepare their staff, volunteers and vulnerable consumers. As little as ten dollars can provide whistles for everyone in a small agency. A $50 donation can provide a loudspeaker for a nonprofit with no other mass-communication system. If you don’t have a favorite agency to support with your preparedness dollars, call CARD and we’ll be happy to recommend agencies that truly need and will welcome your support.
