5-Minute Message: Off-the-Shelf — Rolling Suitcases

Humans struggled with various ways of lugging  their belongings with them for most of history before some brilliant person thought to put wheels on suitcases. The simple addition of wheels can transform your disaster response supply cache from a stationary asset into a moveable and immediately accessible treasure trove of preparedness.

Rolling carts, containers, backpacks, duffle bags, and suitcases come in a wide variety of sizes, materials, and wheel types. You can get them at hardware, luggage, and big box stores, or nonprofit thrift stores (i.e., Goodwill, St. Vincent de Paul, or Salvation Army).

Whether it’s personal preparedness items for individuals, an agency go-kit for a business, or a massive cache for an entire neighborhood: make sure you have rolling suitcases or carts handy to grab, roll, and go!

Tip: Backpacks with both wheels and shoulder straps make excellent agency go-kits!

5-Minute Message: Contexts and Themes — Love

With Valentine’s Day approaching, it’s the perfect time to help your team practice articulating your preparedness and response efforts as an expression of love. Whether it’s love of friends and family, or love of community and personal interests, most people will be happier and more interested in participating in disaster readiness activities when the context and reason is wrapped around who or what they love.

A simple way to start is to ask each member of your team “who do you love?” Follow up with making sure they do something to increase the preparedness of the people they named. For some people, an easier question to open the discussion is “what do you love to do?” Together you can find ways to weave preparedness into whatever activity they choose!

Tip: To get everyone into the mood, share what you absolutely LOVE about preparedness, safety, and disaster readiness

Happy Valentine’s Day!

5-Minute Message: SKIP Kits

A SKIP (Safety Kept In Place) Kit is much smaller than a Go-Kit.  It’s just a few simple items in a ziptop bag, stashed wherever you spend time. Under your desk (where you would Drop, Cover and Hold On); in a glove compartment; in the couch cushions; or in a purse/backpack, etc.  Customize and make your SKIP Kit your own.  Any small item that that will help you stay safe, calm and comfortable in those first moments after something happens can go in your SKIP Kit.  Some ideas:

- whistle
- flashlight/glowstick
- marker
- bandana
- tissues
- mylar blanket
- hand sanitizer
- water pouch & medicine
- paper & pen – for reminders, information or inspiration

Wherever you are, have a little safety kept in place!

5-Minute Message: Safe at Your Desk

Many of us spend a great deal of time at our desks. Make your desk safer with some simple steps:

- For earthquake safety – or other situations, such as workplace violence – make sure you have room under your desk to use for protection. Test it out by practicing your Drop, Cover and Hold On skills.

- Look at the walls near you, and at the objects on your desk. Remove or secure things that might fall, fly, break or otherwise cause harm.

- Keep some useful safety supplies at your desk. Have some water, food (i.e. energy bars), a flashlight, whistle, handkerchief, marker, important reminders, medication and a few ziptop bags, and you’ll be better able to weather any emergency.

Take a few minutes to improve safety at the place you spend your time!
