5-Minute Message: Off-the-Shelf — Rolling Suitcases

Humans struggled with various ways of lugging  their belongings with them for most of history before some brilliant person thought to put wheels on suitcases. The simple addition of wheels can transform your disaster response supply cache from a stationary asset into a moveable and immediately accessible treasure trove of preparedness.

Rolling carts, containers, backpacks, duffle bags, and suitcases come in a wide variety of sizes, materials, and wheel types. You can get them at hardware, luggage, and big box stores, or nonprofit thrift stores (i.e., Goodwill, St. Vincent de Paul, or Salvation Army).

Whether it’s personal preparedness items for individuals, an agency go-kit for a business, or a massive cache for an entire neighborhood: make sure you have rolling suitcases or carts handy to grab, roll, and go!

Tip: Backpacks with both wheels and shoulder straps make excellent agency go-kits!

Take a Left at the Eiffel Tower

On March 31st, 1889, the Eiffel Tower was completed in Paris, France. Originally planned as the temporary centerpiece for an exhibition, the Eiffel Tower has become an international symbol for France and one of the world’s most visited monuments. The tower is so prominent in the landscape of Paris that directions to most everything else are given relative to it. As you provide information on the location of preparedness and response resources, be sure you help to orient newcomers, tourists and directionally challenged people by including the major landmarks in the area. Natural and human-made markers help people orient themselves when emergency situations leave people disoriented or make directions difficult. Plot key landmarks — major buildings, mountains, bodies of water — on your maps to make them better preparedness resources.

Mellow Preparedness

For many people, the last week of December often offers some downtime. Whether it’s a slower pace at work or just taking some time off, there are many enjoyable ways you can further your preparedness at a leisurely pace. Some suggestions:

1) Enjoy some quality Couch Potato Preparedness by watching some old MacGyver episodes. Being resourceful is often more important than having resources.

2) Learn how to mediate, relax, breathe deeply and let go of stress. Being able to get calm and focused in a crisis is an overlooked preparedness skill.

3) Take some extra time to reconnect with, and appreciate, the special people in your life. Being part of a united, supportive community is one of the greatest emergency resources you can have.
